People in Crisis Clinical and Diversity Perspectives

Chapter 13

People in Crisis: Clinical and Diversity Perspectives By Lee Ann Hoff

This Chapter's message has twofold significance:

  1. Research with survivors of natural disaster was a key source of theory for the entire crisis field of clinical practice.
  2. While the loss and destruction of natural disasters present serious challenges for survivors, these challenges are vastly heightened in the psychological recovery process faced by survivors in instances where deliberate human policy decisions and physical force are used to injure and control people-- as in war, torture, human trafficking, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence.

While three Chapters—11, 12, and 13—address this topic for immediate relevance to front line crisis workers, readers are referred to an entire book for further coverage of the topic beyond crisis facets in a public health and human rights framework, including case material from across continents: See Violence and Abuse Issues by Lee Ann Hoff (2010, Routledge).
